What an SEO agency actually does

An SEO agency helps your website earn more visibility in search engines and turn that visibility into customers. The work falls into four areas: technical SEO, which makes sure search engines can crawl, render and index your pages; content and on-page SEO, which makes each page the best answer to the searches it targets; authority, mainly earned through links from other trusted websites; and measurement, which connects all of it to enquiries and revenue.

A good agency does not do everything at once. It works out which of those areas is holding your site back and concentrates effort there first. A site that Google cannot index properly gains nothing from new content. A site with excellent content but no authority stalls on page two. Getting the order right is most of the job.

How to choose the best SEO agency for your business

There is no single best SEO agency; there is the best agency for your business, market and budget. These are the criteria we would use if we were hiring one:

  • Relevant experience: have they worked on businesses like yours, with similar competition and sales cycles?
  • Transparency: will they show you exactly what they do each month, and give you access to the work?
  • Reporting: do they report enquiries and revenue, or only rankings and traffic?
  • Who does the work: will the person who pitches you be involved, or is delivery handed to juniors?
  • Methods: will they explain how they build links, and do those methods stay within Google’s policies?
  • Terms: are pricing and contract length published and reasonable?

Questions to ask any SEO agency

  • What would you do in the first 90 days, and why in that order?
  • How will you measure success, and how will we know if it is not working?
  • Can you show us an example of a monthly report?
  • How do you build links? Do you ever pay for them?
  • Who will work on our account, and how much senior time do we get?
  • What happens to our content and data if we leave?

A good agency answers these clearly. A vague answer to the link building question in particular is a warning sign.

04

Red flags to watch for

  • Guaranteed rankings or guaranteed first-page positions
  • Prices per link or "packages" of hundreds of links
  • Reports full of rankings for terms nobody searches
  • Long contracts with no performance review points
  • Refusal to explain methods, often called "proprietary"
  • Agencies that keep ownership of your content or accounts

SEO agency services for UK and US businesses

Most of our clients are in the UK, with a focus on Leeds and Yorkshire, but much SEO work is location-independent. We work with US companies, particularly B2B and SaaS businesses, remotely, with async updates and calls arranged across time zones. If you sell in both markets, we can plan international SEO with the right structure and hreflang. See our international SEO service.

For local businesses in Yorkshire, see SEO agency Leeds, SEO agency Yorkshire and SEO agency Manchester.

What an SEO agency should deliver in the first 90 days

SEO takes time, but the first three months should still produce visible progress. If an agency cannot show you any of the following by the end of the first quarter, ask why:

  • A completed audit with prioritised findings you understand
  • A keyword-to-page map showing which page targets which search
  • The most important technical problems fixed or scheduled with your developers
  • New or improved pages for your highest-value searches
  • Accurate tracking of enquiries or sales from organic search
  • Early signals: more pages indexed, more impressions, rankings moving for priority terms

Big revenue results usually come later, but the foundations and leading indicators should be clear within 90 days.

SEO agency vs freelancer vs in-house team

An agency gives you a range of skills — technical, content, outreach, analytics — without hiring each role. A freelancer can be excellent value for a specific skill or advice but has limited capacity. An in-house SEO hire builds deep knowledge of your business but needs tools, training and support from other specialists. Many businesses end up with a mix: an in-house marketer working with an agency for technical and link building, or an agency handing over to an in-house team over time.

The right choice depends on how central search is to your growth and how much SEO work there is to do. Our SEO pricing page compares the options in more detail.

What good SEO agency reporting looks like

A monthly report should answer three questions in the first minute: what did the agency do, what changed, and what happens next. Look for enquiries, calls or revenue from organic search at the top, followed by leading indicators such as impressions, clicks and rankings for terms you agreed in advance. Branded and non-branded search should be separated, because growth in people searching your name is not the same as new customers finding you. Every report should list the work delivered, so you can connect activity to results.

Reports that open with a long list of keyword positions, or with "visibility scores" from tools you cannot check, are a sign the agency is reporting what looks good rather than what matters.

Why we do not publish made-up results

Many agency websites are full of impressive percentages with no context. We only publish client results with agreed baselines and permission, and we are documenting those on our case studies page. In the meantime, we are happy to show you our audit and reporting formats so you can judge the work directly.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Need something more specific? Ask a strategist

01What does an SEO agency do?

An SEO agency improves your visibility in search engines through technical SEO, content, link building and measurement, and connects that visibility to enquiries and sales.

02How much does an SEO agency cost in the UK?

Our SEO agency packages start from £750 per month, with Growth from £1,500 and Scale from £3,000. Across the UK, agency prices vary widely, so compare what is included and who does the work. Prices exclude VAT.

03How do I find the best SEO agency?

Look for relevant experience, transparent pricing and reporting, clear link building methods, senior involvement in delivery and reasonable contract terms. Avoid anyone guaranteeing rankings.

04Is it worth hiring an SEO agency?

It is worth it if search is a meaningful way your customers find businesses like yours and you can commit to at least several months. If not, we will tell you during the free audit.

05How long before an SEO agency gets results?

Early improvements often appear within one to three months. Significant results in competitive markets usually take six to twelve months.

06Do you work with US companies?

Yes. We work with US businesses, especially B2B and SaaS companies, remotely.

07What is the difference between an SEO agency and an SEO consultant?

An agency usually handles strategy and delivery, while a consultant advises and your team implements. We offer both.

08Should we use an SEO agency near us?

For local SEO, an agency that knows your area helps. For national SEO, choose on expertise, transparency and fit rather than location. We work with businesses across the UK and US remotely.

09What should an SEO agency report each month?

Enquiries, sales or pipeline from organic search first, then leading indicators such as impressions, clicks and rankings for agreed terms, with branded and non-branded search separated and a list of work delivered.

10Do you offer a trial or short engagement?

Yes. A one-off SEO audit or a consulting day is a low-risk way to see how we work before committing to a monthly plan.
