How Much Does SEO Cost in the UK? Real 2026 Prices

SEO quotes in the UK run from a few hundred pounds a month to five figures, and most suppliers will not name a price until the second call. This guide sets out what the market charges in 2026, what each budget buys in real hours, and how to tell a fair quote from a cheap one.

How much does SEO cost in the UK? The short answer

SEO in the UK typically costs between £500 and £2,000 a month for a small or medium-sized business in 2026. Local-only campaigns start from about £300 a month, competitive national campaigns run from £3,000 to £10,000 or more, and a one-off SEO audit costs between £500 and £3,000.

Those ranges come from Whito’s UK SEO cost research, updated in July 2026, and other UK sources are broadly in line, although guides aimed at larger B2B firms quote higher. The points below are the ones that change what you will actually pay.

  • Who does the work matters most. Freelancers charge £300 to £2,500 a month and agencies from about £1,000 upwards
  • Most SEO is sold as a monthly retainer. One-off projects and day rates suit audits, migrations and advice
  • UK prices have risen 15 to 30% since 2024, as AI search and higher quality standards added work
  • Below about £500 a month, nobody can cover technical work, content and links together
  • Our own prices are published: from £750 a month, with a one-off audit from £495

What do UK SEO agencies, freelancers and consultants charge?

UK SEO prices depend first on the type of supplier. A junior freelancer and a large agency can both call their service "SEO" while differing by a factor of twenty in price and in the hours behind it. This table uses Whito’s UK provider data for the first quarter of 2026.

Type of supplierMonthly costHourly rateUsually suits
Junior freelancer£300 to £800£30 to £60Local SEO and simple sites
Experienced freelancer£800 to £2,500£60 to £150Small businesses and niche sectors
Small agency£1,000 to £3,000Not usually quotedMost UK small and medium-sized businesses
Mid-size agency£3,000 to £7,000Not usually quotedCompetitive sectors and multi-location firms
Large agency£7,000 to £20,000 or moreNot usually quotedNational brands and large ecommerce
Strategy-only consultant£500 to £2,000£100 to £250Audits and support for in-house teams

A second UK source, Whitehat SEO’s 2026 pricing guide, gives a similar picture: £300 to £2,500 a month for freelancers and £1,500 to £20,000 or more for agencies. Both put freelancers at 30 to 50% cheaper than agencies for comparable work. The saving is real, but so is the trade-off. One person has limited hours and no cover when they are ill, where an agency has writers, developers and outreach staff to call on.

International surveys are a poor guide to UK prices. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers worldwide and found an average of $2,917 a month, with agencies at $3,209 and freelancers at $1,348. Those figures are in US dollars and are pulled down by low-cost markets, so use UK data when you set a UK budget.

What is a realistic monthly SEO cost for a business your size?

A realistic monthly SEO cost follows the size of your market, not the size of your company. A two-person firm chasing national insurance searches needs more work than a fifty-person firm that only serves one town. With that caveat, these are the monthly budgets Whito reports for UK businesses in 2026.

Type of businessTypical monthly budgetWhat the work usually covers
Local service business, such as a plumber, dentist or salon£300 to £800Google Business Profile, local citations and location pages
Local or regional business, such as a shop, restaurant or trade£500 to £1,500Local SEO, basic on-page work and content updates
Growing SME, such as B2B or professional services£1,500 to £5,000Technical SEO, content strategy, link building and reporting
Ecommerce store£2,000 to £8,000Category and product pages, site structure and technical fixes
Multi-location or mid-market business£3,500 to £10,000Multi-location SEO, technical work and content at scale
National brand or enterprise£10,000 to £25,000 or moreA dedicated team, full strategy and international SEO

If your customers are local, start with the first two rows and read our local SEO services page for what that work involves. If you sell nationally, the bottom of the SME range is the lowest budget at which content and link building can both happen every month.

How is SEO priced: retainers, projects, hourly and day rates?

SEO is priced in four ways: a monthly retainer, a fixed project fee, an hourly rate or a day rate. The monthly retainer is the most common. In the Ahrefs survey of 439 providers, 78.2% charged a monthly retainer, 48.9% offered per-project pricing and 34.8% charged by the hour, with many offering more than one.

Pricing modelHow it worksTypical UK costBest for
Monthly retainerA fixed fee each month for an agreed scope of ongoing work£500 to £10,000 or more a monthBuilding rankings over time
Project feeOne price for a defined piece of work with an end date£250 to £5,000 for most projectsAudits, migrations and set-up work
Hourly rateYou pay for the time used£30 to £150 for freelancers, £70 to £300 for agenciesAdvice and small fixes
Day rateA freelancer or consultant works for you by the day£200 to £1,200 or more, by experienceStrategy days, training and embedded work

An SEO retainer cost is easier to budget for, but it is only as good as the scope written behind it. Ask for the monthly deliverables in writing, because "ongoing SEO" can mean almost anything.

Whitehat SEO puts UK freelance day rates at £200 to £400 for junior practitioners, £400 to £700 at mid-level and £700 to £1,200 or more for senior specialists. Day rates are useful for comparison even when you are buying a retainer, because they let you turn a monthly fee into hours.

A fifth model, payment by results, sounds attractive and deserves caution. A supplier paid only when you rank has every reason to chase easy phrases or use tactics that break Google’s rules. Google’s own guidance is that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.

What does a one-off SEO project cost?

A one-off SEO project in the UK usually costs between £250 and £5,000, depending on the job. Projects suit work with a clear finish: finding out what is wrong, moving a site without losing rankings, or setting up something that then needs little upkeep.

One-off projectTypical UK costWhat you should receive
SEO audit£500 to £3,000Technical, on-page and competitor findings in priority order
Keyword research£300 to £1,500A keyword list with search volumes, mapped to pages
Website migration£1,000 to £5,000Redirect mapping, launch checks and monitoring afterwards
Content strategy£1,000 to £3,000Topic clusters and briefs for three to six months
Local SEO set-up£250 to £800Google Business Profile, citations and a review process
Penalty recovery£2,000 to £10,000Link audit, clean-up and a reconsideration request

These are Whito’s 2026 figures. For comparison, our own one-off prices are £495 for a full SEO audit and roadmap, £995 for a technical SEO audit, £1,500 for site migration support and £450 for a consulting day. An audit is the cheapest way to find out whether a retainer is worth buying at all, and you can take the document to any supplier. See SEO audit services.

What does your monthly budget buy in hours?

A monthly SEO budget buys time, and the amount of time is smaller than most buyers expect. No price guide shows this directly, so we worked it out. The table divides each budget by the published UK hourly rates: £60 to £150 for an experienced freelancer and £70 to £300 for an agency.

Monthly budgetHours with an experienced freelancerHours with an agencyWhat fits in that time
£500About 3 to 8About 2 to 7Upkeep of one local profile and a short report
£750About 5 to 12About 3 to 11Local SEO plus fixes to a few pages each month
£1,500About 10 to 25About 5 to 21Technical fixes and one or two new pages or articles
£3,000About 20 to 50About 10 to 43Content, link building and technical work running together
£5,000About 33 to 83About 17 to 71A small team working across a large or competitive site

This is arithmetic, not a survey, and real suppliers also spend part of the fee on tools and overheads. It does line up with the hours Whitehat SEO publishes for UK retainers: 5 to 10 hours a month at £500 to £1,200, 15 to 30 hours at £1,500 to £3,000 and 30 to 50 hours at £2,500 to £5,000.

The practical use is simple. Ask every supplier how many hours your fee covers and who works them. A £1,500 retainer delivered by a senior person for ten hours can be worth more than the same fee spread across twenty junior hours.

What makes SEO cost more or less?

SEO costs more when there is more to fix, more to write or more competition to overtake. Six things account for most of the difference between a low quote and a high one.

What drives the priceLower costHigher cost
CompetitionA local trade in one townLegal, finance, insurance or software sold nationally
Condition of the siteA fast, well-built siteSlow pages, a messy structure or a past penalty
Area you targetOne town or cityThe whole UK, or several branches
Content neededA handful of service pages improved onceFour to eight new articles every month
Links neededDirectory listings and a few local mentionsOngoing digital PR
Who does the workA junior following a checklistA senior specialist

Prices have also moved for everyone. Both Whito and Whitehat SEO report that UK SEO prices have risen 15 to 30% since 2024. They give the same reasons: AI search features have added work, and Google’s emphasis on experience and trust means pages need named authors, evidence and original material. If you last bought SEO in 2023, expect a higher quote for the same scope.

Where the supplier is based plays a part too. Whitehat SEO reports that London agencies charge 30 to 50% more than agencies elsewhere in the UK, a gap it says is narrowing as more work is delivered remotely.

Our SEO pricing page shows how these factors change the price of our own packages.

What costs are left out of an SEO quote?

An SEO quote often leaves out costs that you will still pay. None of them is a trick, but together they can change the real price a good deal, so check each one before you compare suppliers.

  • VAT. Agency prices are usually quoted without it, and the UK standard rate is 20%. If your business is not VAT registered, a £1,500 retainer costs you £1,800
  • Content. Whito notes that retainer fees typically exclude content production unless the quote says otherwise
  • Developer time. An audit lists the fixes. Someone still has to make them, and that may be your web developer at their own rate
  • Link building and digital PR. Some suppliers bill these as a separate budget on top of the retainer
  • Tools and reporting. Ask whether software costs are inside the fee and whether you keep access to the data if you leave
  • Your own time. Approving content, answering questions and supplying expertise usually takes a few hours every month

Ask for the answer to each of these in writing. Two quotes that look £500 apart are sometimes the same price once the exclusions are added back.

Is cheap SEO worth it?

Cheap SEO is worth it only when the job is small. A few hundred pounds a month can keep a single local profile in good order. It cannot pay for technical work, content and link building together, and Whito puts the floor for that combination at about £500 a month.

Below roughly £300 a month the sums stop working. At UK freelance rates that fee buys two to five hours, so the work is either automated, sent overseas or not done. The risk is not only wasted money. Google says sites that break its spam policies may rank lower or not appear at all, and Whito puts the cost of recovering from a penalty at £2,000 to £10,000.

  • Guaranteed first-page or number one rankings
  • A price under £300 a month for anything beyond one local profile
  • Contracts of twelve months or more with no break point
  • Links sold by quantity, or any mention of private blog networks
  • Reports that show impressions and rankings but never enquiries
  • No access for you to your own Google Search Console and analytics
  • A proposal that cannot say what will be done each month

Any one of these is a reason to ask harder questions. Our guide to choosing an SEO agency in Leeds has a scorecard for doing that.

10

How do you compare two SEO quotes fairly?

Compare SEO quotes by what is inside them, not by the monthly figure. Put the same eight questions to every supplier and write the answers side by side.

  • How many hours a month does this fee cover, and who works them?
  • What exactly is delivered each month? Please list it
  • Is content included? How many pages or articles, and who writes them?
  • How are links earned, and is there a separate budget for that?
  • Is the price before or after VAT?
  • What is the minimum term and the notice period?
  • Who owns the content, the accounts and the data if we leave?
  • What will the monthly report show, and can I see a real example?

The first question does most of the work. Divide the fee by the hours and you have an effective hourly rate to set against the market rates above. A quote that works out far below £60 an hour is not being delivered by an experienced person.

How do you work out whether SEO will pay for itself?

SEO pays for itself when the profit from the extra customers it brings is greater than the fee. You can estimate the break-even point before you spend anything, using two numbers you already know.

  • Take the monthly cost of SEO, including VAT if you cannot reclaim it
  • Work out the average profit from one new customer, not the sale value
  • Divide the first number by the second. The answer is how many extra customers a month you need from search

As an illustration, suppose SEO costs £1,500 a month and a new customer is worth £600 in profit. £1,500 divided by £600 is 2.5, so three extra customers a month covers the fee and everything beyond that is return. If that number looks out of reach for your market, a smaller scope or a different channel may suit you better.

Allow for the delay. Results build over months, so the early invoices are an investment in later ones. Whito and Whitehat SEO both put meaningful results at six to twelve months, with local work often showing sooner. Our SEO ROI calculator runs this sum with your own traffic and conversion figures, and our guide to what SEO is explains why the work takes the time it does.

01What is the average monthly cost of SEO in the UK?

Most UK small and medium-sized businesses pay between £500 and £2,000 a month for SEO in 2026. Local-only campaigns start from about £300 a month, and competitive national campaigns cost £3,000 to £10,000 or more.

02How much should a small business spend on SEO?

A small local business should expect to spend £300 to £800 a month, and a shop, restaurant or trade covering a wider area £500 to £1,500. Below those figures the work rarely covers the basics. If the budget is not there yet, a one-off audit is a better use of the money than a thin retainer.

03How much does local SEO cost in the UK?

Local SEO in the UK costs about £300 to £800 a month for a single location, or £250 to £800 as a one-off set-up. The work covers your Google Business Profile, citations, reviews and location pages. Several branches or a competitive sector push the price higher.

04What do freelance SEO consultants charge in the UK?

UK freelance SEO consultants charge £300 to £2,500 a month, or £30 to £150 an hour depending on experience. Day rates run from about £200 for a junior to £1,200 or more for a senior specialist.

05How much does an SEO audit cost?

A one-off SEO audit in the UK costs between £500 and £3,000, depending on the size of the site and the depth of the review. Ours costs £495 and includes a prioritised roadmap.

06Why has SEO become more expensive?

UK SEO prices have risen 15 to 30% since 2024. AI search features have added work, and Google’s emphasis on experience and trust means pages need named authors, evidence and original material. The scope of an SEO retainer is wider than it was two years ago.

07Do SEO prices include VAT?

Usually not. Most UK agencies quote prices excluding VAT, which is charged at the standard rate of 20%. Check every quote, because a freelancer below the VAT registration threshold may not charge it at all.

08Is SEO a one-off cost or a monthly cost?

It can be either. Audits, migrations and set-up work are one-off projects with a fixed fee. Building and keeping rankings in a competitive market is ongoing work, which is why most suppliers charge a monthly retainer.

09Can I pay for SEO based on results?

Some suppliers offer it, but treat it with caution. Payment tied to rankings encourages easy targets and risky tactics, and Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. A fixed fee with clear deliverables and honest reporting is safer.

10Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

Not at the start, but often over time. Google Ads charges for every click and stops when the budget stops. SEO costs the same each month whether it brings ten visitors or ten thousand, so the cost per visitor falls as rankings improve.

11How long do I pay for SEO before it works?

Expect to pay for six to twelve months before SEO shows meaningful results in a competitive market. Local SEO often moves sooner, at three to six months. Early signs such as rising impressions usually appear in the first one to three months.

12Can I do SEO myself for free?

Yes, the basics cost nothing but your time. Google Search Console and a Google Business Profile are free, and a small local site can go a long way with both. Paid help becomes worthwhile when the problem is technical or the market is competitive.
