LLM SEO: How AI Assistants Find and Cite Your Website

LLM SEO makes a website discoverable, understandable and useful when AI assistants answer questions with web sources. Start with crawl access and strong source pages, then make claims easy to verify and measure citations. Google AI Search and ChatGPT Search use different systems, so no single file or schema setting guarantees inclusion.

The term covers several journeys that are often blended together. A person may see Google's AI Overview in Search, ask ChatGPT to search the web, or use an assistant that does not browse at all. Only a system that retrieves a page at answer time can cite that page as a live web source. A model's training data is a separate question, and a mention without a link is different from a source citation.

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO applies normal search foundations to answer interfaces: make important pages accessible, answer a real question clearly, support claims with evidence and give systems a route to related pages. It also adds a measurement habit: check whether the brand appears in sourced answers for relevant prompts and whether that appearance leads to useful visits or enquiries.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) still matters because many AI answers draw from search indexes or web retrieval. The label “generative engine optimisation” is sometimes used for similar work. It does not name a separate guaranteed ranking channel. Our answer engine optimisation guide discusses answer structure; this page concentrates on how retrieval and citation can work across platforms.

How do AI assistants find a website?

An assistant with web access typically starts from an index, search result or live fetch, selects candidate sources, reads part of a page and assembles an answer. The exact selection system varies by product and may change. A page therefore needs a crawlable route, text that states its topic and evidence that matches the question. A beautiful image with no accessible explanation gives a text-based retrieval system less to work with.

For Google's AI features, Google's own guidance says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. There is no separate technical requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google's guidance also recommends clear textual content, useful internal links and structured data that matches visible content. That is a reason to fix ordinary search accessibility before buying a special “AI SEO” plugin.

Which crawler does ChatGPT Search use?

ChatGPT Search has a distinct crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes it as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. GPTBot is listed separately for model training, and ChatGPT-User relates to user-initiated actions. Those labels matter when you audit robots.txt; changing one policy does not automatically mean the same thing for every OpenAI use.

What makes a page worth citing?

A citable page makes a specific claim and shows where it came from. For a service firm, that may mean a clearly named process, the current service area, a real author or reviewer, a dated methodology and a worked example with assumptions. For a research article, it means primary-source links and enough detail for a reader to check the conclusion. Do not invent statistics or client results to create apparent authority.

Place the direct answer near the relevant heading, then explain conditions and exceptions. If the page answers “How long does SEO take?”, it should state that timing varies with competition, site condition and work done, then explain how to measure progress. A vague introduction followed by repeated keywords makes extraction harder for people as well as machines. Use descriptive headings, tables when comparisons are real, and concise alt text for meaningful images.

How should you show source evidence?

Source attribution helps a reader decide whether to trust a claim, but adding citations is not a magic ranking factor. Link to the original policy or technical documentation for factual platform claims. Keep dates on volatile facts and update the page when the source changes. Connect related pages with internal links that make sense in context; a site-wide block of 40 unrelated AI pages is a poor substitute for a useful topic structure.

Which crawler settings control AI search visibility?

The practical first step is to audit what you currently allow. A robots.txt rule controls certain crawlers' access to a URL; it does not rewrite content, grant inclusion or guarantee a citation. Test the relevant user agent and important URL templates before making a site-wide change.

Platform or useDocumented routeWhat to checkWhat a pass does not promise
Google AI Overviews and AI ModeGoogle Search indexing and snippet eligibilitySearch Console index status; snippet controls; accessible contentAppearance or citation in a particular answer
ChatGPT SearchOAI-SearchBot web crawlingrobots.txt allowance and readable pagesA link in every ChatGPT answer
OpenAI model training crawlGPTBot, separately documentedYour policy choice for this user agentChatGPT Search visibility or exclusion by itself
User-initiated ChatGPT fetchChatGPT-UserWhether the page can be fetched in that contextAutomatic inclusion in search responses

Google says special AI files or schema are not required for its AI Search features; in particular, llms.txt is not needed for Google. Other services may have different conventions, but do not treat an optional text file as a replacement for crawlable pages, accurate content and normal site navigation. Document any crawl-policy decision with the owner of the site, because training and search uses are separate business choices.

How do you optimise pages for AI answers?

Choose a question that matters to your customers and map it to one strong page. Write a short, direct answer, then add the facts needed to qualify it. A Leeds consultancy answering “What does an SEO audit include?” should show the actual components, likely outputs and what a buyer can do with the report. If the answer differs by site size, say so instead of making a universal promise. Then test the technical and editorial path:

  1. Inspect the intended page in Search Console and confirm it is an appropriate index candidate.
  2. Test its text without relying on scripts or images to carry the core answer.
  3. Add descriptive headings, dates, source links and clear author or business identity where genuine.
  4. Link from relevant pillar and sibling pages with anchors that describe the destination.
  5. Check any structured data against visible page content and supported types.
  6. Re-read the page as a buyer and remove claims you cannot substantiate.

This sequence follows Google's basic AI Search guidance and sound editorial practice. Structured data helps describe a page when it is valid, but neither Google nor OpenAI promises that schema alone will generate citations. Our AI SEO guide covers the broader content and visibility strategy, while AI Overviews guidance focuses on Google's interface.

How can you measure AI citations responsibly?

Build a fixed prompt sample from real customer questions, not only prompts that already mention your brand. For each, record the platform, date, location or account context where possible, exact wording, whether browsing was active, answer text, cited URL and the competitor sources shown. Repeat the same sample over time. A single answer is unstable evidence because generated responses can vary.

FieldExample recording ruleWhy it matters
PromptKeep exact wording and customer intentSmall changes can change sources
Platform and modeRecord Search, ChatGPT Search or another productSystems retrieve differently
Date and contextRecord test date, language and locationAnswers and local results change
CitationSave linked URL, not just brand mentionA mention may not send traffic
OutcomeReview referral traffic and qualified leadsVisibility has business value only if useful

Calculate a simple observed citation rate as cited answers divided by valid sampled answers. For example, two cited answers in 20 checked prompts is 10% of that sample, not 10% of all AI searches. Report the sample size and method beside the figure. Search Console can show Google's search performance, but it will not describe every assistant's answer. Referral analytics can miss some activity, so use several signals and avoid a single “AI visibility score” as the whole story.

What does LLM SEO not guarantee?

No optimisation can force an AI assistant to cite a particular page. The system may answer from other sources, decline to browse, summarise without a link or select a different page for the same question. Being mentioned in model output also does not prove the model read your current page. Treat screenshots of one favourable answer as examples, not proof of durable market share.

Be careful with claims that an llms.txt file, a hidden block of prompt text or mass-produced FAQ pages will solve visibility. Google's public guidance gives no special AI requirement beyond normal Search eligibility. A better next action is to identify one high-value question, improve its source page and measure the same prompt set again after the page is crawled. If outside help is useful, our SEO service can review the sources, crawl controls and measurement plan.

Frequently asked questions

Need something more specific? Ask a strategist

01How Is LLM SEO Different from Traditional SEO?

LLM SEO adds attention to how answer systems retrieve, summarise and cite pages. Its foundations overlap with ordinary SEO: accessible pages, useful answers, clear identity and relevant links.

02Does Google require special markup for AI Overviews?

No, Google says there is no additional technical requirement for its AI features beyond normal Search eligibility. Structured data should still match visible content when you use it.

03Does llms.txt help with LLMO?

Google says an llms.txt file is not needed for its AI Search features. Other assistants make their own decisions, so a file cannot replace crawlable pages, accurate content and platform-specific access checks.

04Is OAI-SearchBot the same as GPTBot?

No, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search and GPTBot for model training crawl. Check and document those user-agent decisions separately.

05Can I block model training while allowing ChatGPT Search?

OpenAI documents separate controls for GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot. Test the actual robots.txt rules and keep an owner-approved record of the policy choice.

06Will FAQ schema make an assistant cite me?

No, FAQ schema does not guarantee a citation or a search feature. The answer itself must be useful, accurate and accessible, and each platform chooses sources independently.

07How can I tell whether ChatGPT sent me a customer?

Check referral analytics when a link was clicked and ask new enquiries how they found you. Some visits may lack clear referral data, so treat the result as an estimate rather than a complete count.

08Should I create one page for every prompt?

No, group prompts that share the same intent into one strong page. Split a page only when the reader needs a distinct answer or decision path.

09Can a site be cited without ranking first in Google?

Yes, different answer products use different retrieval and selection systems, so a Google rank alone cannot predict every citation. Check actual linked sources for the prompts and platforms that matter to your customers.

10How often should AI citations be checked?

Use a consistent sample and a cadence your team can repeat, such as a monthly review. Keep the prompt wording and method stable so changes are interpretable.

11What if an AI answer quotes outdated information about my business?

Correct the source page first and make the current detail easy to find, with a date where useful. Then check whether the assistant has refreshed its source; you cannot assume an immediate update across every platform.
